On April 11, 2024, three new reports authored by economists Milt Barker and Gregg Erickson were released. The reports take a close look at the job creation (or lack-thereof) of AIDEA's Loan Participation Program and dividend distributions to the state, and how the agency's activities came to be shielded from legislative and public oversight. These deep dive reports look at the root of AIDEA's claims of creating jobs and economic development in the state and the push by the agency to remove itself from any checks and balances.

You can find the three reports and the joint executive summary at: https://salmonstate.org/press-releases/new-economic-reports-show-aidea-fails-at-creating-jobs-succeeds-at-eluding-legislative-oversight.

The press release sent out from SalmonState announcing the reports can be found here: https://salmonstate.org/reports

In the latest update, AIDEA has submitted a Land Use Permit to the Division of Mining, Land, and Water to conduct fieldwork in support of the Ambler Road project including cultural resource surveys; landing zone clearing; facilities reconnaissance; airstrip reconnaissance and weather station placement; hydrologic and hydraulic investigations; land surveys; fish habitat studies; wetland investigations; geophysical surveys and probing; geotechnical drilling, including cross country travel of a tracked drill between adjacent boreholes; temporary camp placement, and winter cross-country travel of a tracked vehicle with temporary camp structures on a tracked or sled trailer.

AIDEA submitted the application despite the Biden administration’s recent rewrite of the required environmental analysis of the Ambler Road Project which could result in a reversal of the Trump Administration’s federal approvals of the project.

The public is invited to comment on this proposed application by May 4 to the Division of Mining, Land, and Water at 3700 Airport Way, Fairbanks, AK 99709 on or before 5:00 p.m. on the date noted above. Questions concerning this activity or requests to view the full application packet should be directed to Dianna LeiAnberger, e-mail: dianna.leinberger@alaska.gov.

Thanks Hal- really helped me to understand how this organization runs- and we wonder why people don’t trust government.
